The initials VDRL are used to refer to the Venereal Disease Research Laboratory test. It is a representation of a Slide flocculation test for the serological diagnosis of syphilis. Cardiolipin antigen is used as a reagent in this test to detect auto-antibody in patient serum. Cardiolipin antigen is an extract of the bovine heart muscle that has been supplemented with lecithin, cholesterol, and alcohol. After two to three weeks of treponemal infection, tissue damage results in the production of autoantibodies against cardiolipin. The mitochondrial membrane is the antigen that encourages the formation of autoantibodies. Certain autoantibodies and cardiolipin can interact negatively.
