Thyroid ultrasonography is a type of ultrasound that employs sound waves to create images of the thyroid gland in the neck—typically used to look for any lumps or nodules near the neck. Ultrasound of the head and neck area should be done by an experienced radiologist. Benign neck lesions such as cysts, lipomas, carotid artery tumours and hyperplastic lymph nodes are quite well diagnosed on ultrasound neck. It is the method of choice for evaluation of tumor infiltrations of the wall of the great vessels. Salivary gland tumors in the superficial lobe can be delineated completely by sonography. Salivary stones can be detected and localized.
